Rev. Jim Humphries — Pastor
Jim has served as pastor of Christ since 2006, having previously served United Methodist Churches in Huntersville, and eastern NC. He’s been married to Lisa for 29 years, and has three children: Emma (25), Abby (20), and Jack (15). Jim is a second-career pastor, having spent more than 10 years in the business world before pursuing a call into ordained ministry. He received his Bachelors Degree in Journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill; and his Masters of Divinity from Duke University (his college basketball loyalty remains with the “lighter shade of blue”). Jim believes that the Bible is something to be lived out in the world, and therefore invites Christ UMC to be not merely “hearers” but “doers” of the word.
Rev Donnie Mitchem is our Minister for Connection and Outreach. Donnie was ordained a Deacon in 2014. She is married to Danny and they have one Son, Cooper. At Christ, Donnie works with our children and community outreach. Donnie loves working in ministry with those in our community, especially our partners at Coulwood STEM Academy. During the week, you will find Donnie working as a psychologist at a local school, and on the weekends, you will find her at a weekly AWAKE covenant and study group on Saturday mornings at 8 am at Chick Fil A. (Come on by and visit one morning!) Donnie received her BGTS from Wesley Seminary and her M.S. degree from Radford University. Whether it’s making sandwiches for our friends at Urban Ministries, packing book bags full of supplies for children, or helping organize a 5k (organize, not run), Donnie strives to equip Christ UMC to live out its mission statement, “A Beacon for Christ in our Community.”
Danny has been a proud member at ChristUMC since the
late 90’s and loves working with our Youth! After various
“roles” volunteering at our VBS’s and other children’s programs, he began teaching an adult Sunday School class, and occasionally Wonderful Wednesday small group classes. He attended the Central Carolinas “Walk to Emmaus” in 2006, which led him to serve along with a Kairos prison ministry team. In 2009 he felt called to assist with our Youth program and began teaching the Youth Sunday School class. The following year Danny was added to staff as Youth Leader. In addition to the Youth program he stays busy volunteering with our audio/video worship team and is a full time Graphic Designer for a christian non-profit organization. He and his wife, Rev. Donnie Mitchem, have been married for 19 years and have a 13 year old son, Cooper. Danny enjoys playing the guitar, listening to music, and playing with his dogs Beullah & Pippin.
Carolyn Harte — Church Administrator
Carolyn serves as the church office administrator at Christ UMC. She is often the first face you see as you walk into our office area. She started in January of 2017. She and her husband Tom have been married since 1979 and have been active members of CUMC for close to 30 years. During that time she has served on almost all of the committees at one time or another, taught Sunday school, volunteered in the nursery, sang in the choir, helped lead the children’s music programs and will volunteer her time when needed. She is the proud mother of one son, TJ, who grew up in the Church and created lifelong friendships with several of the youth that attended at the same time. TJ is married to Laura and they currently reside in Germany. Carolyn enjoys learning new crafts and is always willing to try a new hobby. She enjoys reading, gardening, physical activity, making jewelry and has recently started creating skin care products using essential oils.
Tom Wyke — Church Treasurer
Tom is our church accountant and a valued member of our congregation since 1971. Tom is one of those guys who works behind the scenes and is rarely seen or appreciated by lay people for all the hard and difficult work that he does. Tom and his wife Barbara normally attend services during the early service so many of you don’t have the pleasure of knowing Tom on a personal or a professional level but he has served as church accountant since the mid-90s when the workload and level of complexity for the job reached the point where a pro was needed. Tom is truly a “pro”! He has a Master’s degree in nuclear engineering from NC State and worked for both Westinghouse and Duke Power during construction of Duke nuclear power plants. He retired from engineering work in 2009 but still gives his time and service to Christ United Methodist Church by preparing church payroll, paying vendors, making entries into the church accounting system, coordinating preparation of the church budget, making deposits and keeping records for the After School and Summer Camp programs, preparing various financial reports used by the church staff and finance team and serving as the principle interface with the bank, the IRS and the NC Department of Revenue. How’s that for an impressive list of responsibilities?
Tom and Barbara have two daughters, Carol and Kathy, two sons-in-law and five grandchildren. He is a quiet, unassuming man who any of us should consider lucky to have as a friend or compatriot. We can tell you without reservation that Tom’s service to our church is based on a desire and commitment to serve God and our community and that he is very good at what he does. Please take a moment to acknowledge and thank Tom the next time you see him.
